More Derby Hat Swap and Some May Day

I promised some piccys of me IN the hat Dede made me for the Kentucky Derby Hat Swap (see last post!) but forgot until today so here's one. You must go see Dede modeling this hat before she sent it to me on her blog, too! I think this hat brings out the SILLY in us, Dede!!!

And I HAVE to show you some fun shots from yesterday when my eldest daughter, Emily, participated in her school's May Day celebration. Each school's second grade (girls, mostly) wind a May Pole using a very carefully choreographed "dance," an activity that I believe has been going on in some form for hundreds of years. Our school started having a May Day celebration in 1910 and then stopped in the '60's. They reinstated the tradition on the school's 100th birthday in the early '90's and have been doing it ever since!

My Emily is only in first grade but she was asked, along with a handful of other first graders, to be a "streamer holder," which meant that she sat in a chair under the May Pole and held the streamers in a certain position until the girls were ready to wind them. This doesn't sound all that special, but believe me, it is! She had to go to May Day practice twice a week for a couple of hours for the last few weeks and she got to wear the same dress as the second grade May Pole dancers! But then she was also asked to help carry the basket of flowers to the May Day Queen. The May Queen was a very sweet high school girl who sat up on a stage during the dancing, along with her "court." She also got to help UN-wind the May Pole after the whole thing was over...that's what's going on in these photos...I was able to get up close at that point, without being one of those annoying "papparazi parents"! ;)

Here she is in line with the other first graders, preparing to do the first grade dance...

Here she is doing the all-important job of "streamer holding"...

Raychie (right) and her cousin had fun watching the girls...

Here is Emily carrying a huge basket of flowers to the May Queen.

And here's Emily helping to unwind the May Pole.

The May Queen saw Emily eyeing her after the dancing was over and waved her over for a photo! What a sweetie.

So that's what we've been up to this weekend! Hope you had a lovely weekend, too. I'm hard at work on some new items for Amy for my second week on Inspire Co. and can't wait for you to see...

Come back tomorrow for Yummy Monday!

Hugs,

Cheryl
